Parenting Dilemmas - Pshhhaw

Stumbled across this burning debate today on a parenting site about what kind of bath mat to use; apparently the mother asking has a big problem with mold and mildew forming below the mat. All kinds of other parents chipped in - some swear by bleach, others chide the bleach-users, there are recommendations for which kinds of mats to use and lots of anecdotes about bathing together with babies. All this to say - really? Does this really need to be all that complicated? I fold a hand towel and lay it on the bottom of the tub. Wring it out and hang to dry and wash when I do the next load of laundry.

Really? Does parenting really need to be such a big deal? The best advice we've every gotten about parenting came from my grandmother: "This baby is coming to join your family. He's going to fit into your schedule. Not the other way around." This one gem has made all the difference. We have friends who've basically "written off the first ten years" of their kids' existence just assuming that they wouldn't be able to do anything for at least that long. We, on the other hand, spent four months in Europe this summer with a toddler and one on the way.

Really? Parenting is not that big of a deal. It's about balance and fitting that baby into your own routine and schedule. So parents - lighten up a little eh? And use a hand towel in the bath.

  1. AMEN I so agree with you. Cory and I always said that we would never be the parents that dropped life when the baby came along, but to bring them with us and keep having fun... we have and I must say it's been even more fun than before!
